Connecting Communities

Roads and highways across the Territory are being upgraded as part of the Government’s massive commitment to improving infrastructure.

Connecting remote communities and improving traffic flow in urban hubs are part of the NT Government’s long-term strategy.

The work has already begun. The Territory Government has boosted roads funding to $322 million, almost four times that of 2001, and is targeting priority areas. Projects recently announced include:

an $11.8 million upgrade of the Tanami Road and Plenty Highway in Central Australia

improvements to the Wollogorang Road in the Tennant Creek region.

Improving access

In the booming centres of Darwin and Palmerston, nine road projects totalling almost $17 million are underway or set to begin later this year. These are designed to ease traffic congestion and meet the needs of a growing population. They include:

A second inbound lane on McMillans Road between the Vanderlin Drive roundabout and the Peter McAulay Centre.

improvements to the Kalymnos Drive intersection with McMillans Road in Karama.

upgrade of Tiger Brennan Drive between Woolner Road and Amy Johnson Avenue.

duplication of McMinn Street between Foelsche Street and Frances Bay Drive.

duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive between Dinah Beach Road and Woolner Road and new traffic lights at the Gonzales Road intersection.

construction of a third inbound lane along the Stuart Highway from Marjorie Street to McMillans Road.

improvements to the Stuart Highway intersection with Bagot Road and Snell Street for turning traffic and upgraded pedestrian crossings near the flyover.

an upgrade of the Elrundie Avenue and Catalina Road intersection.

In addition, work will begin on Stage Two of the $110 million Tiger Brennan Drive extension, to improve traffic flow on this major arterial road between Darwin and Palmerston and improve access to East Arm Port.

The road plan also includes improvements to bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways.
