Connecting Communities

Roads and highways across the Territory are being upgraded as part of the Government’s massive commitment to improving infrastructure.

Connecting remote communities and improving traffic flow in urban hubs are part of the NT Government’s long-term strategy.

The work has already begun. The Territory Government has boosted roads funding to $322 million, almost four times that of 2001, and is targeting priority areas. Projects recently announced include:

Improving access

In the booming centres of Darwin and Palmerston, nine road projects totalling almost $17 million are underway or set to begin later this year. These are designed to ease traffic congestion and meet the needs of a growing population. They include:

In addition, work will begin on Stage Two of the $110 million Tiger Brennan Drive extension, to improve traffic flow on this major arterial road between Darwin and Palmerston and improve access to East Arm Port.

The road plan also includes improvements to bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways.
